What this tool does
Energy bills, food labels, heating specifications and physics homework each use a different unit for the same quantity. A kilowatt-hour is exactly 3.6 megajoules; a food Calorie with a capital C is what physics calls a kilocalorie. This converter uses the thermochemical calorie (4.184 J) and the international-table BTU (1055.056 J), which are the definitions used in most published tables.
