Field of View Calculator

Horizontal, vertical and diagonal angles of view, the frame size at a distance, and the crop factor.

Results

Horizontal angle of view 39.5978 °
Vertical angle of view 26.9915 °
Diagonal angle of view 46.7930 °
Frame width at that distance 7.2000 m
Frame height at that distance 4.8000 m
Crop factor 1.0000

What this tool does

The frame width at a distance is the number that actually helps when planning a shot: a 50 mm lens on full frame covers 7.2 metres across at ten metres, so a group photo needs either more room behind you or a wider lens. Crop factor is quoted against the 43.27 mm diagonal of 35 mm film, which is why an APS-C sensor comes out near 1.5.

Formula

angle = 2 arctan(d ÷ 2f)

Limitations

  • The result is an estimate based only on the values you type. Real situations often include factors this calculator does not know about.
  • The default values are typical reference figures, not measurements of your situation. Replace them with your own data whenever you have it.
