What this tool does
A budget is not a moral exercise; it is a subtraction that most people never write down. List what comes in, then every outgoing on its own line, and this page sorts them largest first, shows each one as a share of your income, and tells you what is left. The annual figures beside them are the ones that change minds: a line that looks trivial by the month rarely looks trivial by the year.
Formula
left over = income − Σ expenses ; savings rate = left over ÷ income

Frequently asked questions
Why does it show what a year would be?
Because monthly numbers hide their own size. Thirty-two for subscriptions sounds like nothing and is nearly four hundred a year; a hundred and twenty on going out is fourteen hundred. The annual column is not there to make you feel bad about either — it is there because a year is the scale at which you can actually compare a spending line against something you would rather have done with the money.
What is the months-to-save-one line?
How long you must save to put aside one month of your own living costs. It converts the saving rate into something you can feel: at three, a year of saving buys four months of freedom, and an emergency fund covering six months is eighteen months away. It is the same number as the saving rate, said in a way that makes its consequences obvious.
