What this tool does
Thermal conductivity is the number that decides how much heat walks through a material, and insulation datasheets state it in whichever unit their market expects. The British unit comes in two forms that differ by a factor of twelve — per foot and per inch of thickness — and mixing them up is the classic way to specify insulation twelve times better or worse than intended. Each factor here is derived from the definition of the BTU, the hour, the foot and the degree rather than copied from a table.
Worked example
1 W/(m·K) 0.577789 BTU/(h·ft·°F)

Limitations
- US and imperial (UK) units with the same name are not the same size. Check which system your figures come from.
- The calculation runs at full precision and only the display is rounded. If you copy an intermediate value and retype it, small differences can appear.
