What this tool does

Uncompressed audio is wonderfully predictable: the size is just four numbers multiplied together, with no codec to guess about. That makes it easy to see what each choice costs — going from 16 to 24 bits adds half again, and doubling the sample rate doubles everything. The compressed figure is shown alongside so the trade is in plain sight.

Limitations

  • The calculation runs at full precision and only the display is rounded. If you copy an intermediate value and retype it, small differences can appear.
  • Mixing units is the most common source of error. Convert every input to the units shown next to each field before calculating.
