What this tool does
Fuel economy is the one conversion where the units are inverted relative to each other, so the arithmetic is a division rather than a multiplication. Europe measures consumption (litres per 100 km, lower is better), the United States and the United Kingdom measure economy (miles per gallon, higher is better), and the two gallons differ by 20 %, which is why a British car always looks more efficient than an identical American one on paper.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just multiply L/100 km by a factor to get mpg?
Because the two units measure opposite things. L/100 km is fuel per distance: lower is better. Miles per gallon is distance per fuel: higher is better. Converting between them means dividing, not multiplying, so the relationship is a curve rather than a straight line. Halving your consumption does not halve your mpg — it doubles it.
