What this tool does

Pizzas are priced by diameter but eaten by area, and area grows with the square of the diameter. This compares two sizes on square centimetres per unit of currency, which is the only fair way to decide.

Formula

area = π × (d ÷ 2)² · value = area ÷ price

Limitations

  • The tool works with whatever currency you use for the inputs; it does not convert between currencies.
  • The calculation runs at full precision and only the display is rounded. If you copy an intermediate value and retype it, small differences can appear.

Frequently asked questions

Is a large pizza really better value?

Usually, and by more than people expect, because area grows with the square of the diameter. A 40 cm pizza is not a third bigger than a 30 cm one — it has almost twice the area. Two small pizzas rarely beat one large one, even when the prices look similar.
