What this tool does
One gram of pure chlorine in one cubic metre of water is one part per million, which makes the arithmetic simple once the product strength is known. Free chlorine is usually kept between 1 and 3 ppm; much above that irritates eyes and skin, much below and the water stops being protected. Test before dosing and again after — this gives a starting quantity, not a substitute for a test kit.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the product strength matter so much?
Because chlorine products differ enormously in how much active chlorine they carry: calcium hypochlorite granules are around 65 to 70 percent, trichlor tablets near 90, and liquid sodium hypochlorite only 10 to 15. Dosing a 12 percent liquid as if it were 65 percent granules leaves the pool at a fifth of the intended level. Always read the label, add product to water rather than water to product, and never mix two chlorine products.
