What this tool does
Cleaning products, coolants, plant feed and photographic chemistry all come as concentrates with a ratio printed on the label, and guessing it wastes product or leaves the mix too weak to work. Enter the total volume you want to end up with and the ratio does the rest.
Formula
concentrate = volume total ÷ (1 + ratio)

Limitations
- Coverage and consumption figures vary between products. Take the values from the manufacturer's datasheet for the product you are actually using.
- The result is an estimate based only on the values you type. Real situations often include factors this calculator does not know about.
Frequently asked questions
Does 1:20 mean one part in twenty or one in twenty-one?
Strictly it means one part concentrate to twenty parts water, which makes twenty-one parts in total — that is the convention this tool uses. Some labels mean one part in twenty instead, a difference of five percent in strength. When it matters, follow the wording on the product rather than the notation.
