What this tool does
Equivalent dose measures the biological effect of radiation rather than the raw energy deposited, and the sievert is its SI unit. The older rem survives in American documents and is exactly one hundredth of a sievert, which makes 1 mSv the same as 100 mrem. Everyday figures are small: a chest X-ray and a long-haul flight are both usually quoted in tens of microsievert. What a given dose means for a given person is a separate question, and one for a radiation protection professional rather than a converter.

Limitations
- This converts between units of radiation dose. It says nothing about whether a dose is safe: that depends on the type of radiation, the tissue exposed and the time over which it was received, and it is a question for a radiation protection professional.
- Absorbed dose (gray) and equivalent dose (sievert) are different quantities and are not interchangeable. One gray equals one sievert only when the radiation weighting factor is 1, which holds for photons and electrons but not for alpha particles or neutrons.
- The calculation runs at full precision and only the display is rounded. If you copy an intermediate value and retype it, small differences can appear.
