What this tool does

Absorbed dose is pure physics: one gray is one joule of radiation energy deposited in one kilogram of matter, whatever the matter is and whatever the radiation does to it. The older rad is exactly one hundredth of a gray. Because the gray ignores biological effect entirely, it is the right unit for sterilisation and materials work and the wrong one for talking about risk to people, where the sievert belongs.

Limitations

  • This converts between units of radiation dose. It says nothing about whether a dose is safe: that depends on the type of radiation, the tissue exposed and the time over which it was received, and it is a question for a radiation protection professional.
  • Absorbed dose (gray) and equivalent dose (sievert) are different quantities and are not interchangeable. One gray equals one sievert only when the radiation weighting factor is 1, which holds for photons and electrons but not for alpha particles or neutrons.
  • The calculation runs at full precision and only the display is rounded. If you copy an intermediate value and retype it, small differences can appear.
