What this tool does
Type an amount and a rate and you get both readings: the amount treated as net, with VAT added, and the same amount treated as gross, with VAT extracted. Rates and rounding rules differ by country, so use the rate that applies to your invoice.
Formula
VAT = net × rate ÷ 100 ; net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Limitations
- Tax rates and rounding rules differ between countries and sometimes between regions. Use the rate that applies to your invoice.
- The tool works with whatever currency you use for the inputs; it does not convert between currencies.
- The calculation runs at full precision and only the display is rounded. If you copy an intermediate value and retype it, small differences can appear.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I remove VAT by subtracting the same percentage?
Because the percentage is applied to the net amount, not to the gross one. Adding 23 % to 100 gives 123, but taking 23 % off 123 gives 94.71, not 100. To go backwards you divide by 1.23. This calculator shows both directions at once so the mistake cannot happen.
