What this tool does
BMI compares weight to height squared and places the result in one of four bands defined by the World Health Organization for adults. It is a population screening measure, not a diagnosis: it says nothing about muscle, body composition or individual health.
Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

- The result is an estimate based only on the values you type. Real situations often include factors this calculator does not know about.
Frequently asked questions
What does BMI not tell you?
It cannot distinguish muscle from fat, or say where body fat sits. A very muscular athlete and someone carrying excess fat can share a BMI of 28 while being in completely different health. It also works poorly for children, pregnant women, older adults and some ethnic groups, for whom other thresholds apply. Treat it as one rough screening number among several.
