What this tool does
There are two families of storage units and they are quietly different. The decimal family (kB, MB, GB) multiplies by 1000; the binary family (KiB, MiB, GiB) multiplies by 1024. Drive manufacturers use the first, most operating systems display the second, and the gap grows with size: about 7 % at the gigabyte, almost 10 % at the terabyte. Both families are listed here side by side.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
The manufacturer counts a terabyte as 10¹² bytes, while the operating system divides by 1024 three times and calls the result a gigabyte, when it is really a gibibyte. Nothing is missing: 1 TB is 1 000 000 000 000 bytes, which is 931.32 GiB. Convert TB to GiB above to see exactly where the number comes from.
