What this tool does
These formulas all start from a base weight at five feet and add a fixed amount per inch above it, which is why they are so simple and so blunt. Shown here for reference and comparison rather than as a target, with the healthy BMI band underneath because a range is a more honest answer than a number.
Formula
Devine: 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 feet)

Limitations
- This tool is informational only. It does not diagnose, treat or replace a qualified health professional. Speak to a doctor before making decisions about your health.

- The default values are typical reference figures, not measurements of your situation. Replace them with your own data whenever you have it.
Frequently asked questions
Which of these numbers is the right one?
None of them, taken alone. The Devine and Robinson formulas were devised in the 1970s for calculating drug doses, not for telling people what to weigh, and they depend on height only — so they say the same thing to a heavily built person and a slight one of the same height. The healthy BMI range at the bottom is a range for a reason. Body composition, frame and health history matter more than any single figure, and a clinician is the person to interpret them.
